Hi Pablo, I have only had my Apple Watch for 3 or 4 weeks now and haven’t tried this, but doing a quick Google search brought up this article:
http://www.cultofmac.com/320234/how-to-navigate-using-only-your-apple-watch/ The author does not at all mention an iPhone, but I have a feeling that you still may need your iPhone with you. The reason why I think this is the case is because while the Apple Watch has a GPS receiver, it does not have storage to have Maps downloaded to the device and even on the iPhone, Apple Maps only works with a cellular connection. The Apple Watch Series 2 has GPS but not a cellular modem hence it has no way to access maps on a server unless it is via the iPhone. The built-in GPS receiver is, as Lois pointed out, primarily for fitness purposes. Apart from the fact that you can do phone calls via your Apple Watch and get notifications, fitness and health is a huge focus of Apple. I often go for walks with my dog or for a run and especially in the summer and if I’m running and wearing only shorts and a T-Shirt it’s a huge benefit if I can just have the Apple Watchon my wrist and still get the GPS accuracy for distance, speed and so on. Since the Apple Watch is also waterproof I don’t even have to worry if I take my dog to the river on a hot day and want to jump in with him for a swim. I assume in a year or two or three Apple will figure out how they can give the Apple Watch cellular connectivity and still have at least a solid day of battery life and at that point you can most likely do even more with the watch. In any case, I will try the navigation thing tomorrow morning when I go to work if I don’t forget. I’ll just start the route and then put my phone in Airplane mode and see what happens. The Apple Watch does have some internal storage so who knows, maybe it is smart enough to download a the section of maps needed for the route via the iPhone once you start it, but I’d be really impressed if this were the case. Regards, Sieghard From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Pablo Cesar Morales Sent: Tuesday, November 29, 2016 11:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: about iWatch I just talked to apple sales department. I asked them, if the apple watch series 2 has gps antenna, so I don’t need my phone around to know where am I? They said, yes, you don’t need to have your iPhone around to use the gps capabilities. I asked them, ok, if I don’t need my iPhone around to use the gps capabilities, I will be able to use maps and for example get the way to somewhere just typing an address? They said, no, to be able to do that you need to get your phone. I said, so I don’t understand. What is the reason of that gps antenna then? You said that I don’t need my iPhone to use the gps capabilities, but you are saying now that if I want to go to a store, I need my phone to tell to maps the address and start the way ? So for what reason I want a iWathch with gps antenna? They couldn’t answer my question. So really, and I want to think that this lady wasn’t very aware about the apple watch . What are the usability of a gps antenna in a apple watch ? Thanks guys, -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list.
