My iPhone shows Page 1 of 2 when I am on that spot on the screen. This is a Braille Edge. Maybe someone else knows if there is a label element command with a braille display. The VoiceOver gesture is a two finger double-tap and hold. I'm not sure if you can change the label on the page number on the screen. Other icons like apps, if I do the VoiceOver gesture, the default label is shown, but if I do' that gesture on the page number, the label text is blank. Have you rebooted your braille display? That way you will not be interrupted, but you can go to messages and check to see what new messages you have received.
