Hi Chip,
OK, so I just thought I try this and I actually did not have anybody sighted around. I used Skype to call my iPhone about 10 times and the first 6 or 7 times I turned off Voiceover before I called and then tried to answer with the swipe. After a couple of tries I am able to answer pretty much on the first try, a few times it didn’t work on the first swipe and I had to reposition my finger a bit, but I was always able to answer and also to hang up which is not done with a swipe but with a single finger tap about ¾ or 1 inches above the home button. The trick with the swipe to answer seems to be that you can’t swipe starting at the left edge and swipe all the way across. You have to touch about in the same place where the end call button is which means in the middle of the phone right above the home button, but a bit up and not just barely on the screen, once again, probably an inch or so up. It would be interesting to see where this is with a tactile screen protector, but my guess is it would be right where the dot is for the 5 on the keypad or maybe just below that. Anyhow, if I touch there and then swipe across to the right edge of the screen, the call does get answered. I should also mention that I have a 6S and not a 6S Plus. You would have to ask your sighted wife if on the larger screen this is still in the same place above the home button or if it would be further up. Now, having said this, I am sometimes a skeptical person when it comes to taking what others say for granted. You did mention that a triple click of the home button doesn’t turn Voiceover when the phone is already ringing. So, I once again turned off Voiceover, called myself with Skype and while my favourite Meghan Trainor “All About that Bass” ringtone was playing, I triple pressed the home button and bingo, Voiceover came right up. I gave it just a moment after Voiceover said “Voiceover On” and then did a 2-finger double tap and the call was answered. I tried this also about three times and Voiceover started up reliably each time. One thing, though, if your volume is not very high you may not hear it because it comes on at the lower volume because the ringtone is playing so it may not be very loud. One thing you can do is to first press the volume up or down button, this will silence the ringer, then try a triple press of the home button. I assume that the triple click of the home button normally works for you? Just make sure it is set to Voiceover and not to something else. You find it in Settings > General > Accessibility and at the very bottom of the screen, once you are in the main accessibility settings, a single 4-finger tap on the lower portion of the screen will take you right to the last element on the screen which happens to be the accessibility shortcut button. If it says Voiceover you are all set. I somehow can’t imagine that this would work on my 6S but not on a 6S Plus. Regards, Sieghard From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Chip Orange Sent: Sunday, November 8, 2015 5:37 PM To: [email protected] Subject: how to answer a call Hi All, I’ve just bought my first smart phone (an Iphone 6 s plus); to be shared with my sighted wife. Since it’s to be shared, voice over won’t be on normally. One of the first things I tried was how to answer a call when VO is not running. I am unable to start VO with a home triple tap while the incoming call is ringing (which means the two finger double tap cannot be used). I am unable to successfully do the swipe needed to answer the call. It is just too unreliable, and often selects other options. Those are all the choices I know of, and was wondering if anyone has any ideas? Thanks, Chip -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list.
