If you're familiar with an older iPhone, like the 4S or earlier, then the Lightning cable is analogous to the older cable which had a wide 30 pin connector on the end that plugged into the phone. On the iPhone 5 and newer iPhones, instead of a 30 pin connector you have a Lightning connector which plugs into the phone. It's reversible, so you can plug it in either way. It's also quite a bit smaller than the 30 pin connector. It feels kind of like a mini USB connector.

Hello Carol. I have a 5S and it uses a lightning charger. The charger
consists of a cable with a USB end and a small end which goes into the
charging port on your phone. There should also be a small cube with a
two-pronged electrical plug. If I remember correctly, the cord and
cube both have wrapping material on them which should be removed. The
side of the cube directly opposite the prongs has a slot which you fit
the USB end of the cord into. Once you do that, plug the other end of
the cord into your phone and then plug the plug end into an electrical
outlet. If you prefer, you can also simply plug the USB end of the
cable into a usb port on your computer to charge your phone. Hope that
gets you past your difficulty. Enjoy your new phone.

Please can you explain what I'm looking for with regard to the lightning
charger and how it works, as I've never had one before.

Phone is slowly losing battery ...

Thanks, as always!
