Not exactly, usually you would see a number on the App Store icon, it would say something like "App Store, 1 item" which would indicate there is one app update available. If you turn automatic app updates on they will just download and install automatically in the background and you would only know when you see the "recently updated" message when you touch an app or if you open the App Store and go to updates to review which apps were updated. I believe the original poster was referring to not seeing the "1 new item" or "2 new items" or whatever any more. I find that sometimes when I go to the app store it will have an update or updates and not show this, but if I wait long enough it will show it.
