I don't know if my last message came through, so I'll try it again. Anyway, before this new way of dealing with Notifications, all I would do is access the Notifications tab and the list was immediately available. I did not have to use the new way of two-finger doubletapping. That's why I was bumfuzzled. Thanks to all for the help. Things are working well again.
