See the attached image. I agree with you: ctermbg and ctermfg, if set to the same numeric value, should show the same color and basically be an invisible block. But that's not true when the color value is 7. That's the issue I was describing. I may have misled you by using the term "bold black." Probably should have used Bright Black.
