as told by Bruce, two different versions of VirtualBox cannot
co-exist on the same machine. However, if you want to test
VBox 3.0.8 but want to keep a backup of the older version you
can simply uninstall the old version and install the new version.

As the .xml format changed since VBox 2.2.2, VBox 3.0.8 will
update the .xml files of the machine settings to the new format
but it will keep backups. So you can try VBox 3.0.8 and decide
if it fits your needs.

If you need to go back to VBox 2.2.2 you uninstall VBox 3.0.8,
install VBox 2.2.2 and then you have to recover all .xml files
in ~/.VirtualBox from .bak. After that, you should be able to
use VBox 2.2.2 again. Note that the .vdi format didn't change
since ages, therefore the new version wouldn't harm your VMs.

Kind regards,

Frank
