Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think this should be possible in VB. Could it be that some firewalls (guest, host) have a say in this? Or that you need some port forwarding set up to access the guest from the host? Maybe you tried the wrong IPs (e.g. contacting the host via its own IP, not the VB-interface one)? As I said, please feel free to correct me, I mostly use the host interface /bridged network mode.
