One thing I thought I should add: When booting a linux VM, you first get some kind of boot loader, GRUB mostly nowadays. After that you either see the boot messages flashing by, or some kind of splash screen (maybe with a progress bar). All of this is not xorg-related, AFAIK all that is used there is framebuffer. Do you see any of these things when booting? Bootloader? I do not know if it is possible to stop *BSD from showing a splash at boot, on linux VMs you would edit /boot/grub/menu.lst.
