Unfortunately running the screen-capture on a linux host is what I tried
first, and there were so many difficulties that I had to give up. The
technical problems were many and very difficult, audio and video streams
going out of sync, necessary transcodings from one video format to another
failing, etc. Camtasia for Windows is an all-in-one screen (and audio)
capture, editing and exporting application, I really need something like
that, and it just doesn't exist for linux yet.

You are right though, I did not have the problem with applications running
too slowly when I tried to do it that way.
