Most of the newer USRPs have a Zynq FPGA on-board that runs a Linux OS, whose main purpose is to run MPM, which is   used to provide a "server" that controls the underlying radio hardware.    UHD on your host PC talks to MPM to set
  radio parameters, and start/stop streaming, etc.
