Hi folks, I wondered if someone can clear up some questions I have about running the E310 on battery power. I'm aware that I can purchase an E312, but I'd like to use my existing E310's if possible.
** BACKGROUND ** I'm aware that there's a "newer" (circa 2015, so 3 years old now) firmware available for the E310 that apparently enables support for powering the device with a 3.7V battery. However, installing the firmware requires opening the device, connecting a JTAG programmer to the ISP header, and folks in this thread here have reported trouble finding a compatible connector -- http://lists.ettus.com/pipermail/usrp-users_lists.ettus.com/2015-October/016085.html If I can avoid opening the device, hacking a connector on there, etc, I'd like to. Meanwhile, some users in these forums report success by just connecting a 7.2V battery to the device with no mention of a firmware upgrade, such as this thread -- http://lists.ettus.com/pipermail/usrp-users_lists.ettus.com/2017-May/024803.html Yet, Neel at Ettus claims that the E310 (presumably running the original firmware) needs an external DC power supply, in this thread here -- http://lists.ettus.com/pipermail/usrp-users_lists.ettus.com/2015-May/014048.html ** QUESTIONS ** 1. Does one really need to upgrade the E310 firmware to be able to power the E310 with a battery? Or is this only necessary if one seeks to use a 3.7V battery? 2. Can one just connect a (for example) 7.2V battery to the device without bothering with the firmware upgrade? Maybe with a voltage regulator if necessary and a plug that's compatible with the E310 power jack on the end (such as the KLDX-PA-0202-A-LT that is suggested in yet another thread on these forums). Thanks.
