Before going any further, check this :

You will see that there is a rather wide range of Java versions under
which Tomcat 5.5 will run.
So maybe you want to first just use another Java version (without
changing anything else) and see if that solves the problem.
(Basically any Java 1.5 or 1.6 version; the recommendation being that
you use the latest one available, such as Java 1.6.17 I think).
Make sure after installation of the new Java, that the paths which you
see in the configuration program match the correct ones for Java.
(It may be even better to de-install Tomcat, update Java, and re-install
Tomcat, so that the Tomcat installer finds things again by itself).
And as long as you do this, you may also want to use Tomcat 6.0 (the
current version), instead of 5.5 which is quite old already.
and Virtual Machines, however if I
make any changes using the default Tomcat configuration program (i.e.
changing the Intial or max memory pools or the Thread stack size on the
Java Tab) the service fails to start.
You may want to indicate which parameters exactly you tried to change,
and to what value you tried to set them, and what error messages you see
exactly and where.
Without this information, it is hard to help.
