As pointed out, if you run Tomcat with the security manager, then that can't happen. It would throw a security exception.
since diskspace,memory and servers are dirt cheap what advantages does VPS offer?
I think the people using VPS are the ones that lack the expertise to manage their own server.
Personally, I use co-located servers that I own.
i would be curious as to which VPS implementation these guys use
