I checked the scriptaculous docs, looking for a way to manually trigger a server roundtrip. If such a function were available and documented (it is not), you could do this:
autoCompleterTextField.observe('focus', function(event) { $T('autoCompleterTextField').autoCompleter.goGetSomeAutoCompletionsRightNow(); }); If you check the sources, you might find out that this is actually possible. I don't know.
