Thanks for the reply, Andy. I've managed to sort this one out. I
decided to try the JumpStart download, but I couldn't get it running
either (JBoss failed to load some stuff). Google hinted me on this one
however, and by changing from gcj to sun's java 1.5 I could start it.
And sure enough, the quickstart now works just fine.

All in all, I can report that gcj (on Debian Lenny at least) is a
no-no both for the quickstart and the JumpStart, but that sun's java
1.5 works just fine with both (haven't tried java 6).

The command to change ones java environment is
update-java-alternatives and I'm looking forward to finding out which
parts of my system I just broke. :)

Maybe I should have realized this from documentation somewhere, or
maybe it should be recorded that there are problems with gcj. Even
better, I'd be glad to assist in whatever extent possible if someone
wants to track this down.
