I'm sure Howard is quite capable of doing a better job than what happened in T4 (and we'll expect nothing less ;) ) but it's a really tricky thing to get right. I'm still not totally satisfied with the way things work in 4.1.2 and hope that the fresh start T5 has and much thinking will continue to produce a clean model. There are a lot of neat "ajax" features in there already from what I've read. (like event bubbling in the server side as well? perfect abstraction ) Realistically sometimes these things are actually being worked on - if only in someones head for weeks/months until they feel like everything has been thought through.
