avoid it, there was a long trouble thread, more about other perl
packages as perl itself on RHEL5
To my knowledge, we officially support perl 5.6.1 as the lowest with
5.8.6 running on some systems working OK. But in generally, something
newer is going to be better with less spurious issues.
