My apologies. You are right that I should have read more into the thread. People can indeed send email in a variety of ways to get around the ISP limitations put in place to block spam. I myself do that from my ISP to get it through to my company mail, by using, as you said, another port (in my case, SMTPS with SSL) as do several of my clients (as their providers don't allow them to send email if the email address isn't that of their ISP -- another very stupid rule).
