Unless I'm mistaken.. It depends on your system and how you run sa-update.
Are you running it from the command line? via a cron job?:
For example, my Mac e-mails me the output of cron jobs, unless I appened
a >/dev/null to it.
if you run sa-update -D it shows the debug info for the update, assuming
you run it manually.
