Maybe a bug in the local_scan() function?
I think it's a bug in spamc, because I had exactly the same problem, and it was nothing to do with exim. I'm using postfix and a filter I wrote myself to process email via 'spamc'. It worked fine, except with large mails, which caused the spamc process to hang for ages until Postfix eventually gave up and bounced the message. i.e. the symptoms look identical to those described above. I solved the problem by simply making my filter not bother passing the message to spamc at all if it was over 200k. I am using a brand new copy of SpamAssassin I installed just the other day. The settings are 99% standard, the main point of interest perhaps is that spamc is talking to spamd via TCP.
