Well, you can read about the hashcash system at hashcash.org,
basically, it is a per recipient hash generation that assures that a
specific amount of time was required to compute this hash per
recipient. Spammers don't have this time, they send thousands of mails
per minute. The problem I saw was, that hashcash isn't supported very
well on the sending side, there are some plugins/ways to integrate it
into mutt and some other MUAs, but many popular ones are missing.
Also, I'd prefer a plugin on the MTA so my users don't get bothered
with this stuff. My plugin does that for postfix, it puts a hashcash
stamp in every outgoing mail header for every recipient.

SpamAssassin supports verification of these hashes (this is enabled by
default, you only need to configure the mail adresses you accept mails
for in the local.cf
(http://spamassassin.apache.org/full/3.0.x/dist/doc/Mail_SpamAssassin_Plugin_Hashcash.html)

I will send you the plugin this evening so you can try it out (as I am
currently on a run:))
