It's been too long for me to remember, but I think the file to start spamd, /etc/init.d/spamassassin, needed a change in in the path somewhere, like loading the options or further at the end where it checks how the file was called. Also configuration files seemed scattered in several places and I had to track down the right files to change. I left the files, so when I make new changes I have to hunt and change them all again. Stay with RH9. It works and it can work with spamassassin.
