Answer: RTFM -- more browsing and I read the README for spamd. For the 
first time since I first installed it years ago. Oops :-)

Have removed the '-u' switch to spamd; going to ponder the merits (or
otherwise) of this as it theoretically makes things slightly unsafer
for those using spamc/spamd if any holes are found.
