OK, to answer myself, it's all better now. uni2ascii took all that UTF-8ness right on out of there. Given the vendors' strategic commitment to UTF-8 it would be nice if it was supported at some point, but I suspect there are very few (if any) daemons that do right now. So I'll just have to be more careful with OpenOffice.
