As it turned out, I was confusing two similar names scripts. One
script was supposed to be installed under /etc/init.d, which did
contain all required start, stop and restart functions I was looking
for. The other was the regular spamassassin script located at
/usr/bin.

Sorry to have troubled you for such simple mistakes.
