I can't see this defined in the RFC (or is it?), but it seems to be the approach of many programmers. Postfix and Cyrus IMAP leave existing whitespace characters alone, though, which is the correct way to do things. However, Thunderbird does not display leading whitespaces in the "Subject" field body and also removes them when replying or forwarding, so one should probably not rely on a specific behaviour. -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Sincerely Dipl.
