Well, could it be that it just doesn't enforce enough Perl dependencies? Installing from the tarball could have had the same bad result in this case. Whether to enforce some or all Perl dependencies is somewhat a matter of taste. F.i. I prefer to have rpms which don't force me to use --nodeps if I don't want them to overwrite my CPAN installed stuff.
