Yes, thanks for the hint. I removed the file with the German descriptions and all is well. Those custom-language environments are a real trap. I prefer to have it all in en-us on my own server systems, except for the time, but that's usually not administered by me. The interesting part concerning sa is that the warnings only appeared *after* I commented out the hashcash plugin. Unexpected, isn't it?
