This I know (I'm a sysadmin ;-)), what I'm getting at is why would SA time it out? The system should use the hostfile in preference to DNS (e.g., in nsswitch.conf), but for some bizarre reason this lookup isn't. I use hostfiles in a few cases, in fact it speeds up some things especially when there is no local nameserver on the box... think NFS, etc. Mike -- Sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken.
