Well, SA can't run AS a standalone MTA, ie you still need a MTA program like postfix, exim, etc. However, SA can be integrated at the MTA layer, and be called as mail is processed by the MTA. Pretty much what you want to do is set up a stand alone MTA, such as postfix, and have that MTA be configured to either be your mailserver, or forward to your existing MTA. (The forwarding case creates a proxy-esque scenario, and the alternative is to just replace the existing mailserver entirely). Once you've got that set up, you can integrate SA into the MTA so it gets called as mail is received. See: http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/IntegratedInMta
