We have this with users connected via WLAN. If the WLAN is busy, or intermittend not reachable, then Thunderbird asks for the password. Obviously Thunderbird tries to use the stored password, but gets a timeout or other error. Then he comes to the wrong conclusion, that the password is invalid. Therefore it asks for a valid password again. Hope this helps.
