To be precise, dovecot will still create the on-disk indexes (unless you intentionally disable them) even if you something other than the dovecot-LDA.
Using the LDA allows dovecot to update the indexes at delivery time, rather than when a client accesses the mail store, which definitely can be a big advantage, especially with large installations.
