OpenOffice.org is a full office suite similar to and compatible with
Microsoft Office. You can use the "Writer" component to create text
documents in the same manner as Microsoft Word. OpenOffice.org is a
free download from www.openoffice.org, so I don't know what alternative
you're referring to. You can use "Save as" to save a text document in
Word format, but the default is the ODT format. You can also select to
email in MS Word format.
