Such a message usually occurs because computer or program crashed or was 
powered down too hastily, leaving unerased housekeeping files. 

With OpenOffice closed, in the folder where your files are stored, enable 
"viewing of hidden files" and delete any "lock" files you see there.  

In the OpenOfice user profile 
(details at 
[url]https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12426[/url])
beside the folder "User" there may be another lock file.  Delete that also.

Now all should be well.
