There IS an issue somewhere. I do not doubt that this is a weird issue but it happens, period.
It is very hard to get a copy of a broken profile to study. When the report was more frequent, years ago, we asked for broken profiles and I think we even built a survey to help identifying the cause; but that didn't help (honestly, many users are even unable to fix it with the instructions we give them).
then they may have found something, then there may be something to be found.
At a point it was believed that the original problem was the decision to migrate 3.x profiles over to 4.x; "sometimes" this would result in damaging the profile; it would be interesting to know whether this is still reasonable or whether people manage to get this error even if they install a fresh 4.1.7 and keep using it.
This would also explain why other programs don't have the issue, if they really don't.
Focusing on what we can do now, I'd say the easiest thing to do is a "Tools - Reset profile" menu item, or alternatively a "Start with a fresh profile" option at install time. Volunteers welcome etc... but this would probably be helpful to users beyond the specific issue.
