There are many other components in an OpenOffice file - style, metadata and
setting information - which bulk up the archive. Rename the file to type .zip,
open it with an archive manager and examine content.xml with a plain text
editor. That component will contain the data of the file.

It can happen that if a computer is powered down too quickly, or a laptop lid
closed, before the OpenOffice housekeeping data has been written to the disk
platters, the file can be corrupted.
