Frequently such a problem occurs because the computer has been closed down too
hastily after an OpenOffice file has been closed (say by someone closing the
file, then snapping a laptop's lid closed), or by allowing a computer to sleep
or hibernate with an OpenOffice file open.

You should look in the backup and temporary directories pointed to by /Tools
/Options /OpenOffice : Paths. Rename any files in those to type .odt (or
whatever file type you were using) and see if they contain your data.

Download Recuva or PhotoRec (only one needed) and let it do an indepth recovery
of deleted files on your computer. You may get a file containing some or all of
your data (or not).

Also rename the file to type .zip, then double click it - the computer's
archive manager will attempt to open it. If it doesn't open, it may be
repairable with some zip file repair utility. If it does open extract
content.xml; in that, you should find the data, but unformatted.

Quite frankly, my experience advising users with a similar problem on the OO
Forum leads me to hold out little hope of any full or partial recovery using
the .zip file method, although there are occasionally successes using that
method. It is slightly more likely that you may recover a temporary file using
Recuva or PhotoRec; the sooner this is tried the better, as continued use of
the computer runs the risk of overwriting any deleted image of the file in
question.
