When I alphabetize that is, try to put things in alphabetical order the sort uses the Second column. Many years ago in my youth and early days with OO.00 I did this. Now in my [dotage] I can't find the means to get back to using the first column to alphabetize.
When you go to Data | Sort..., you should see the Sort dialogue. On its Sort Criteria tab, you can select which column (or columns) the selected material is sorted by. These are identified either by column name or - if it appears that your columns include labels - by those labels. You can adjust that - and other - behaviour on the Options tab.
