Katherine,
you must understand that installing an app, any app,
including the OS (windows, Linux, Apple OS X, Unix, Sun OS, HPUX ...etc),
might or could open the door wide for backdoor entry
into your computer, and/or install trojans that communicate
to remote site(s) and download and install malware.
There are many websites that you visit with your choice
of browser, and they will install javascripts on your machine.
Many many of these javascripts install malware on your system
without your knowledge, let alone your consent.
It is part of today's world and there is not much that can be done.

Most websites will not work (i.e. display on your screen or allow
interaction by you, such as clicking on a link, or filling a form or
searching ...), without letting them install their javascripts on your
computer.
If anyone tells you that javascript cannot do that, know full well
than person is either a liar or is ignorant of what javascripts can do.

This doesn't help the poster with her problem for two reasons:
1. The user isn't subscribed so she doesn't see your reply
2. These comments doesn't tell what to do to solve the problem

Just a heads up...
I downloaded 2 items yesterday, Adobe Reader for Windows
and Open Office. I assume it was from one of those two items
that my system was infected with animated pop-up ads that
proved to be rather sticky to get rid of. You may have been
hacked...
