Try to save it as a DOC file, and see if that helps.
I also forgot to say that images included in the Word 2010 documents do not show up in Writer.
So a document created in MSO 2010 with an image does not contain the image when opened in AOO? It may be related to how that image is anchored, or, if that image is contained inside of a frame (but that is all speculation).
