It may be worth saying that many (most? all?) touchpads can have their
sensitivity adjusted (via the Control Panel or wherever). Turning down
the sensitivity can solve this problem with gentle, unintentional
thumb dragging whilst retaining touchpad functionality when you need it.

If you use a separate pointing device (mouse, trackball) you should get
Synaptiks (notice the spelling) and install it. It will automatically
disable the touchpad when the mouse is plugged in.
