Touch pads can be very sensitive, so even if one doesn't touch them - or at
least notice that one does - that cursor can hop all over the screen when
typing on a laptop keyboard. My suggestion is that if one is doing serious
work, attach a mouse and disable the touch pad temporarily ; instructions
on how to do so can be found, e g, here :

If one is working on something which demands as much typing as a book,
I'd recommend purchasing an external keyboard for your laptop - a good one
will be easier on your wrists and forearms and save you a lot of time and
aggravation !...
