Note also, as documented in the thread, that in the OMPI 1.8 series "vader" replaces "sm" as the default intranode btl. Lessons I learnt the hard way ... :) I am using sm+knem in OMPI 1.6.5 - it works there - while 1.8.4 is in the works.
