Not really.  GDM is nothing but GNOME Shell running in a login mode as
seen evidently here.


Here's the description of gdm as given by yum info gdm:

Description : GDM provides the graphical login screen, shown shortly after boot
            : up, log out, and when user-switching.

You may very well be right, but if so, the documentation provided by yum doesn't back up your claim.
