FWIW, I installed a KDE only VM.  Installed firefox from the initial DVD.  
Everything ran OK.

Then, updated to the latest versions of all packages.  Firefox still works just 
fine.....


[egreshko@localhost ~]$ firefox

(process:1646): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size 
== 0' failed

is the only message issued when starting from the command line.

So, not sure why you needed a hammer to fix your problem.
