For well over a decade, Microsoft has released updates once a month, on Patch Tuesday. Most computers that run any version of Windows are set to download and apply those patches as soon as they're available. If the OS is updating itself more often, I'd be suspicious. Of course, third-party software gets updated if and when patches are ready, and AFAIK there's no particular schedule for them.
