Do you explicitly unmount your flash drives, before yanking them out.
I have to admit that is the one thing I don't do
so answering with your subject in normal letters: why?

Yes. This reminds me of when I was doing tech support back when Win95
was the "latest and greatest." I told a caller to reboot his computer
and his response was, "OK, I just pressed the reset button." I can
only hope that by the time his box came back up that he understood why
that's not a Good Idea. People, Linux expects you to unmount drives
before you remove them for a number of Very Good Reasons, and if you
don't, you can expect trouble. All I can suggest now is that the OP
install testdisk and hope he can recover the data.
I have but one thing to say to that statement "Amen" .
