FWIW, I just created a DVD iso file with DeVeDe including subtitles. I played it in smplayer and was able to toggle subtitles on/off from the smplayer menu. I used an *.srt file which I downloaded separately from the mp4. No crashes or errors. You may get better help if you actually detail the problems encountered as well as information on what versions you're running.
